As a result of being introduced to Geronimo Stilton books through KIWIreviews, Mr 5 and I are hooked. We are yet to find (and are 100% sure we won't find) one that we don't love! The only problem is that Mr 5 has now become so familiar with them that he wants to read them all by himself. That leaves me in a situation that if I want to enjoy the books, I have to read them by myself! I am an adult but I do get a lot of fun out of the books too!
With a little encouragement, I did manage to get Mr 5 to read some of 'Surfing for Secrets' to me. Wow, have things changed from the around a year ago when I would read the Geronimo books to him as a four year old! Most of the words are now within his capability. We have shared many Geronimo Stilton books now and he is therefore very familiar with the writing style. He was still able to make sense of the general idea of the book even though there were some words that he wasn't familiar with. That is the bonus of knowing Geronimo Stilton books for over a year. He is also familiar with the main characters we have met in the other books in the series. 'Surfing for Secrets' follows the same style and has the same sort of language as the other Geronimo books we have read.
When I asked him about the words which are highlighted by different colours, sizes and fonts, he said that they were interesting words or as they call them at school 'wow' words. I love the way these books encourage children to use interesting language and also make it interesting for them to read the text by using variation of font, size and colour.
As with all the Geronimo Stilton books, 'Surfing for Secrets' has a good dose of adventure, problem solving, humorous interactions between characters and danger. A little bit of love was thrown in right at the end as well. I would be keen to read the next book and see how this develops!
Mr 5 and I particularly enjoyed the the character Grandma Ratrock. She is a take charge sort of lady! She had a funny interaction with Bluster Conjurat and they really were acting like cavemice!!! The illustration to go with it was fun too.
Yet again, another great Geronimo Stilton book. Now I guess I should give it back to Mr 5 and let him finish it! What a pain, when mother and child have to take turns over a great book!
We recently got to read this new book in the Cavemice series by Geronimo Stilton. Surfing for Secrets has a really neat looking cover. It's bright and shows Stiltonoot trying to surf under a big wave. We liked the cover and wondered if the secret was learning to surf. In the first part of the book, there is definitely a new invention and the world's first surf lesson. But the surfing stops fairly quickly.
The rest of the story involves a cast-a-way pirate they find and decide to help. In some ways, I thought it was a bit weird that they were helping the pirate. To me, pirates aren't always the nicest sort of people to run into. However, this pirate seems fairly decent and only seems to want to get home.
The mice go on a pretty cool adventure, that got my daughter sitting right up and leaning into the book to see the pictures. We tried to figure out the secrets as we went as well. The treasure was pretty neat and we were thrilled when they found it and we could see what it was. There is a bit of danger, as well. Plus one big scene where Stiltonoot gets super brave!
In some ways it was out of character, but then again if Geronimo Stilton is going to come into being, Stiltonoot has to get brave and also win the girl. I hope that this slight change continues to grow. It would be neat to see him finally settle into a family of his own. I also hope that travel outside of Old Mouse City happens, and maybe more of the pirates too!
