Tulip and Sprout: A Growing FriendshipProduct reviews...
My son and I are big fans of Geronimo Stilton but this is the first time that we've read any of the mini mysteries and I was keen to see what they were like.
One of the great things about the Geronimo books is that each book is a stand alone story so it doesn't matter if you miss a few or don't read them in the right order. In this book there is a mystery to be solved and Geronimo and a few of his friends and relatives are on the case.
It's your typical Geronimo adventure - fast paced and hilarious with detailed illustrations but in a mini format. We read it over a couple of nights but it could easily be read all in one go and I love that it's the perfect size for popping in my handbag for some on the go entertainment. My son particularly liked the clues throughout the book. They really drew him into the story and got him thinking and trying to solve them.
This book would make a fantastic first chapter book for young children - it's short and sweet but still thoroughly entertaining. We loved it and my son is already asking when we can read it again.
Wow, what a great book. We are fans of Geronimo Stilton already, but I was interested to see what the mini books would offer as a point of difference. For one thing, the price is a real selling point. These books are only $5 each. They are a lot lighter in content compared to the larger full sized books. But they are still as engaging, and are likely good as a starter reader for a young Stilton fan. I can also imagine these would make a great birthday gift for a school friend.
The story itself was really engaging. What we loved was it went back to that early Stilton style we enjoyed. So there is a mystery and it's asking you to think at every chapter. There are clues and it really made us think all the way through. I thought I knew what was going on, and my daughter had some ideas herself. Revealing the outcome at the end was so satisfying.
The characters are all really well known to us because we read the series all the time. But I don't think you have to know much about Geronimo and his family. Every book in this series is always good at introducing you to the characters again. So, even if you have never tried a Geronimo book, this one would be a fine way to go. It's short too, so if you like it you'll know there is a huge body of work with the same characters.
We enjoyed this mini book so much, I'm going to seek out the first 3 minis. I can see this one being as re-readable as a picture book. It's just nice and quick and a fun read as well. A bit of danger and mystery for our school holidays, which was much appreciated.

Kua auraki mai ano a Maui ki te whakahihiko i te ngakau pohewa.
Donovan Bixley retells the story of how Maui captured the secret of fire. This is the traditional tale but with Donovan's unique twist. The pictures are bright and bring their own level of humour to the book. Darryn Joseph and Keri Opai ensure that the story is accurate and culturally appropriate and translate the story for this Te Reo edition.
