Close to the Bone product reviews

The third consecutive No.1 bestselling crime novel from the author of the DI Logan McRae series and Birthdays for the Dead. The first body is chained to a stake: strangled, and stabbed, with a burning tyre around its neck. But is this a gangland execution or something much darker?

Someone's leaving little knots of bones outside Detective Inspector Logan McRae's house, but he's got more pressing things to worry about. Rival drug gangs are fighting over product and territory; two teenage lovers are missing; someone's crippling Asian immigrants; and Logan's been lumbered with an ambitious new Detective Sergeant, a mountain of paperwork, and the unwelcome attention of his superiors and the local crime boss. When another body turns up, it looks as if the similarities between these murders and the plot of a bestselling novel are more than just a coincidence. And perhaps those little knots of bones are more important than they look...

I found that this book wasn't as enjoyable as the first ones, I had got this out the library due to how much I enjoyed the first three but unlike the first three I read this time you knew early who the killer was but not why. Also there were crimes that seemed to be unrelated but as you move through the story you realise that a lot more is connected.

This was also a bit strange to follow as Logan had moved from his flat to a caravan and he kept visiting his girlfriend in hospital and he would have conversations with her but you find out a bit of the story of why she is in hospital and realise that things aren't always as they seem. This book was also based a few years after the Flesh House as you get to know that some things have changed and some of the single offers are now married with school aged kids and marriages have broken up due to the job but some things don't change.

Even thought I didn't enjoy this book as much I still want to read the other books I have missed due the library having them in strange orders (they don't guarantee that they will get the books in the same order they are published) and will keep an eye out for further books by this author as his characters were real and they made mistakes and let suspects get away from them, not on purpose.
