We have had this book for quite a few weeks now and I keep hoping it will grow on me... but it hasn't.

My favourite part of the book is when Little Troll thinks that his mummy looks so beautiful that she is a princess and doesn't want her to leave. Mrs Hag (the troll sitter) however bribes Little Troll with two cups of mud milk after he has had his little melt down and he goes to sleep and then mum comes home with a big bag of his favourite rotten worms. I think I disliked this because I don't agree with bribing my children to be allowed to have some mummy time and I think this book almost encourages the idea that if mummy goes out then children "Little Trolls" should get extra special treats.

My little Misses questioned why Little Troll got treats as well so I think I am not reading too much into the story. I guess if your little one is into trolls you might enjoy this book but its not one for me or my girls.

I loved this story I think we all have our own mummy's little monster at times and a lot of mothers and children alike would be able to relate to the storyline of a child becoming upset when their parents go out for the night. My 1 year old is just going through that stage now when I go out somewhere.

I like the bit when the mother troll was getting ready to go out and put perfume on and stuff and the little troll didnt think it smelt like his mum at all. And then when mum came home she smelt like mum again. I really like the pictures too they are beautifully illustrated certainly the cutest troll pictures I have ever seen!

I recommend this book to parents whose children go through this when they go out because it is a really great little story about how the little troll managed to calm down after his mum left by drinking mudmilk and having a bedtime story. As a teaching aid it could open lines of talking about what might soothe us when we were upset.

Written by Colm Toibin

Product image for The MagicianWhen the Great War breaks out in 1914, Thomas Mann, like so many of his fellow countrymen, is fired up with patriotism. He imagines that the Germany of great literature and music, which had drawn him away from the stifling, conservative town of his childhood, might be a source of pride once again. But his flawed vision will form the beginning of a dark and complex relationship with his homeland, and see the start of great conflict within his own ... more...
