I started reading this book to my son but since he is sick he lost interest easily which was a pity as be would have enjoyed the book. I was expecting to find that the kids would be involved in a secret plot, there were some twists but mostly I found I could predict what would happen.
The story is engaging on a child's level, my son's are really excited when they see another of the Jake in space books and often act out the battles or the bad guys being beaten by kids, they haven't even thought about the practical aspects of space travel or living on other planets. I don't mind how predictable the story is as it is aimed at young children and it is well liked by my sons.
The chapters are short and the story moves fast and there are minimal pictures so the books are able to be read in a few hours even at a child's pace. There are a lot of kids books available that I would not even bother reading or trying to get my kids interested in reading but this is one series that has proved to be successful in engaging the boys and their imaginations (I get questions like can you buy us a cyborg, please Mum I promise to be good )
There is one book left in the series and I an predict that the books will be well read over the next few years.
