Backyard Battlefield product reviews

BACKYARD BATTLEFIELD is every gardener's essential reference guide to bugs.

This book is packed with information and advice about common insects and invertebrates in your garden. It asks 'Do you really need to get rid of them?' And if you do, Ruud tells you how - suggesting a variety of options.

In his inimitable and entertaining style, Ruud Kleinpaste describes many bugs, including codling moths, aphids, monarch butterflies, cicadas, ants, spittlebugs, passionvine hoppers, mantids, weta, grass grubs, snails, slugs, caterpillars, wasps, whitefly, spiders, blowflies, roaches and mosquitoes.

Ruud's clear and colourful photos provide an easy aid to identification of the bugs in your backyard and further afield.

This is an excellent reference book on 'backyard bugs', packed full of information and advice, written by Ruud Kleinpaste in as entertaining a style as he is on television. There is advice on how to get rid of certain insects, as well as a little philosophy and information to consider when deciding whether you really do want to get rid of them. Spiders, for example, are the 'true goodies of the garden'. Others you'd still like to get rid of but it's interesting learning that even they have their good points.

The book has sections on spiders and mites, beetles, flies and mosquitoes, molluscs, sucking bugs, ants and wasps, moths and butterflies, garden goodies, noisy neighbours, stick insects, and rasping thrips. This is a great book to have on the shelf to look up the odd backyard insect or to find information and advice on plant damage, or just for an interesting and often humorous read.

The layout and design of the book and the photographs is very appealing. The macro photography in the book is very nice, and I was impressed to see that the author took all the photographs. A talented 'Bugman' and photographer too then!
