Working in a Early Childhood Centre means that I am always on the lookout for new quality children's books which I can share and read to the children I teach, and as I work primarily with the under 2 year old's this is often quite a challenging task in itself, the books are either to babyish and not really 'stories' that you can read but rather picture books or they are just way to advanced and long for them to sit through. One of our favourite rhymes to do together is 'This Little Piggy Went to Market' so I was pretty excited to see what sounded to be very similar to this come up for review, I was even more so delighted when I was the lucky to review it!

This Little Kiwi Went to Market has turned out to be one of the most beautiful children's books and one which is ideal for both younger and older children, over the past 2 weeks of me having this book for review the children have been asking constantly for me to read the book to them, they absolutely love the bright coloured pages which can't help but capture their attention as they point at the different birds, insects and objects on each of the pages, bringing delight to their little faces, the characters throughout the book are so happy and cute it's no surprise! The book is just the perfect length and it is so easy to read in tune to the 'This Little Piggy Went to Market' rhyme which adds a whole nother dimension of fun to it.

The older children at my daycare and my own 4 year old daughter have also enjoyed this book, along with the other staff members, we have read this most afternoons when they join me in the Nursery and it has only taken a few times of them listening to the book to pick up on the words and for them to begin singing along with the rhyme with me, several of the children have commented that "it's like a piggy song they sing at home". They love the pictures and they also love the added fun that is in the book more suited to their age group of looking for the butterfly, caterpillar and cricket which are hidden on each of the pages. The other teachers I work with have said they also love the book and how the images really capture the natural habitats in which the New Zealand natives actually love, they love the new twist on a classic rhyme, as do I.

As far as books go this one is great, I always enjoy reading New Zealand themed books to children as I think it's so important for them to learn about the country in which they live and about the things within it and this is a fine example of this. The pictures demonstrate New Zealand perfectly and it's been great teaching them about our native birds. I would absolutely recommend this book to teachers and parents, and with Christmas coming up it would make a fantastic gift.
