Ever since I was a kid and went to see the sights in the US of A, I've had a strange "relationship" with pretzels. I liked the crunch and the odd shape held an unusual appeal for me, and even the saltiness wasn't an off-putting element, but there was always something indefinable that stopped me from really loving them.
Roll forward (too) many years and I find myself with a chance to try "Pretzel M&Ms" - little balls of pretzel, wrapped in chocolate and a candy shell. For the life of me, I swear the first one tasted like coffee! Something about that combination of chocolate and salty pretzel conspired to convince my taste buds I had stuck a coffee-flavoured candy in my mouth.
I waited for about 10 minutes to let my tongue "reset" and tried another one, and this time - despite choosing the same coloured candy - my taste buds reported "crunchy cola" flavour. This was getting way too odd for me... I was driving and really couldn't take the time to analyse each colour for flavour variations - not that I expected there to be any - so I offered the bag to my young son to see how he would react.
"They taste yummy!" was the surprising verdict... so he got the rest of the bag to finish off, with my blessings and thanks - I hate to waste expensive treats.
Overall, an intriguing candy option, but not one I plan to repeat for myself. They seem to have taken a lesson from a particular brand of jelly beans from the Harry Potter universe - every flavour except the one you expect. That said, taste is such a subjective thing - it's quite possible it was just a glitch in my taste buds that caused this for me. You may have a totally consistent taste experience.
