Yatai Food Caravan has become an institution in Palmerston North. Located in a lovely scenic part of The Square, in the heart of the CBD, you really can't pass through that corner of the Square and not see it.
Serving a somewhat European'ised version of Japanese cuisine plus some authentic Japanese fare, and all at very reasonable prices, it is a treat for all.
Well worth investigation, why not pop down and say G'day to Atsushi-san and his staff, and experience the taste sensations that make Yatai so famous.

this caravan has been here for as longer than i have and it is still going. that says a lot about it. they have even opened a restaurant which i want to check out one day. the chicken curry is awesome and the katsu option is also wonderful. the chicken is perfectly cooked and still stays crisp even when sliced and put on top of the curry and drizzled with a sweet sauce. i have been a regular customer for many years. i think i will be going back lots more.
I have been a regular since being told of someone in town who made a really good chicken curry for a reasonable price. Boy, was that person right. The balance of rice and curry was perfect, plenty of chicken and a pinch of pickled radish on the side. This is a great feed for any hungry workers or passers-by in our fair city. The caravan's location right next to one of the bigger seating areas in The Square is a godsend. A broad menu leaves options open, meaning as broad a customer base as possible, which I think is essential in business success.
Short and sweet, but I do have this to say in closing... good healthy food, pleasant and helpful staff, affordable prices and a full belly certainly validated my decision to eat from the Yatai Food Caravan.
Having been a regular since the first days of Yatai, I must admit to some slight bias for Atsushi's Chicken Katsu Curry. With the perfect balance of rice and curry, plenty of chicken and a pinch of condiments (pickled radish on the side) this has to be a great feed for a hungry city worker. And with summer rapidly approaching, the caravan's location right by one of the bigger seating areas in The Square has to be a godsend.
With the renovations and building site nearby, the view isn't quite so scenic at present, but building sites don't last forever, and the future holds a much more pleasant atmosphere for the casual lunchtime diner.
A broad menu leaves options open, meaning as broad a customer base as possible - smart business practice - and if you enjoy the caravan's fare, you will probably want to try the food at the recently opened Yatai Restaurant too. Just ask to see a menu if you are interested.
Short, but sweet, this review basically doesn't need to recount all the highlights of the Yatai caravan, just take this one on faith... good healthy food, pleasant and helpful staff, affordable prices and a full belly will vindicate your decision to eat from the Yatai Food Caravan.
