There are no words to describe how much I love this series - in all my years of reading fantasy I have never come across anything else remotely like it. Picture: people with wings, talking animals, magic, conspiracy, visions, guardians, demon dead, gore - this book has it all.

The series is about a young girl and her difficult journey through to adulthood supported by three very powerful men. It's a dark and gritty story but has it's fair share of sweet and funny moments as well.

I love the world that the author has created and all the different creatures that live in it. It's made up of those who have the Blood (magic) and those who don't. The Blood are the ruling society and have a complex system of hierarchy and power which depends on the colour of their Jewels (their source of power) and on the caste they're born into. It's also a matriarchal society where the women rule and the men protect.

It's so well written that you can't help but fall in love with all the characters and the author has struck the perfect balance between seriousness and humour - I love a book that has the ability to make me laugh and cry regardless of how many times I've read it - it's a very difficult book to put down.

No matter how many times I read these books, they are still just as compelling and exciting as the first time I read them. I highly recommend this series to anyone who's looking for something a little different, a little dark and a whole lot of action.

Product image for The Heron's CryNorth Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. What he finds is an elaborately staged murder - Dr Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed. His daughter Eve is a glassblower, and the murder weapon is a shard of one of her broken glasses.

Dr Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim. He is a good man, a public servant, ... more...
