As a under 5's teacher I brought this book about 10 years ago now and have used it all the time, its so fun and loving with bright colourful pages. I love its a hard front and back with 3D caterpillars that disappear during the book. When I had my kids I introduced them to this book from an early age and they enjoyed the rhyming that the book does to say goodbye to the caterpillars during the book.

The book teaches counting backwards from 10, with its awesome way its written it makes the children think by doing the "so that left..." at the end of each number, then as you turn the page the number is there to support the word such as nine you will see 9 on the page too. its gives children an understanding that numbers can go backwards aswell as forward. When you get to the end instead of saying that left it does the "all of a sudden there were" which gets children thinking again with adults encouraging them to guess, oo what could there be next.

The last page happened to be my kids favorite page as it was an awesome surprise, sadly as my kids are 5 and 3 now and grown up with being able to get the book off the shelf themselves the special ending is well no longer, I do however need to go buy stickers to put on the end st he counting can carry on.

Overall I think this is a wonderful book with lots of enjoyment to be had, lots of thinking and enjoyment out of it, this has lasted me 10 years so far and will last longer once I add some more stickers to the back page. But it doesnt seem to bother my kids as they just use their fingers to count.

Product reviews for listing 9155: Tama and the Taniwha -  Written by Melanie Koster

Product image for Tama and the Taniwha"Don't put your puku in the water! The taniwha will get you!"

Tama is down at the lake with his sisters and grandparents. When his sisters tease him about a taniwha being in the water, he takes a deep breath and dives in anyway. What is that wonderful swirling, sparkling apparition? Is it a taniwha... or is it something else altogether?

This story about sibling teasing and family fun will resonate with everyone. Monica Koster's illustrations are a delight, complementing the text beautifully.
