I kept seeing this book at my local Z service station when I went to get petrol and kept thinking I should buy it for my son to learn about his hometown. I have read a few Tommy Kapai books in the Kapai the kiwi series and really loved them so knew he had a good writing style.
Tommy Wilson (Kapai) lives locally here in Tauranga and as he is from Tauranga he has been to the school my daughter goes to in Te Puna a few times to read his stories to the children. I like his books as they always have a New Zealand content which is cool for Kiwi kids.
This book uses the Alphabet to talk about different areas in Tauranga, such as Memorial Park, The Minden Lookout, The Harbour Bridge and Gate Pa to name just a few. For each letter Kapai tells of a place and then may tell of it's history such as Gate Pa was a battle site so children learn of the cool places in their town and get some idea of their history.
The book has a QR code which doesn't mean much to me but apparently if you have a smart phone you can scan the QR and it will take you to a page that gives you more information about the local area, so that is pretty cool too!

The second book in the personal and moving coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the First World War. August 1915. Ellie's life has completely changed in the year since war broke out. She's been forced to leave school to work in the factory, and much worse, her family has received devastating news from the trenches. At least she has her best friend Jack. But then Jack runs off to war. Will Ellie ever see him again?
