I picked up a Maketu Butter Chicken pie this afternoon for my lunch as a "good work mum" for doing the groceries with children in tow. Hey, got to get those rewards where I can! I love butter chicken. It is my 'go to' curry of choice, because its mild with a slight kick. Whether its as a meal with rice or in a pie, I'm not too fussy really. In fact butter chicken pies helped me keep up my strength during my recent pregnancy. But I hadn't tried a Maketu Butter Chicken pie before.

My pie was in the warmer at the supermarket, so I didn't need to heat it. The pie came in a square box, white with shiny golden font. I really liked that. Gold always makes me think of India and that part of the world too. It was a really nice touch to the box. The box had a tear open system which went diagonally. I opened it this way, but I found the angle unhelpful. I wanted to be able to pull the pie out and feel like if it fell backwards it wouldn't fall out. The stability wasn't there for me.

The pie itself looked a bit less like a pie and more like a pod of pastry with filling. There was a LOT of pastry, which was flaky and buttery. A bit too flaky as I shared some with baby and we both got covered. I needed a good shake off after eating. Still the flavour of the pastry was awesome. The filling was really good. The first bite I could actually taste the tomato flavour of the butter chicken sauce. It was creamy and nicely spiced. It warmed my throat but didn't make my eyes water. So that was a good mix really. The price was inline with my normal bakery pie too, so pretty happy with the Maketu interpretation of this new "classic" pie.

Butter Chicken, well it has to be top on my list whether its at the local food hall or just takeaways so i really think my opinion is a valued one . So when i came across a Butter Chicken Maketu Pie at a out of town service station , i just couldnt help myself . I just had to have one . The taste was to die for ten out of ten , the contents was full of real chunky chicken and chock a block full of flavour once again ten out of ten . The pasty was a little flaky and messy but did taste pretty good , and value for money well i called back in on the way home for another , so i can honestly recommend one of these pies to any one

Ever since I gave Butter Chicken a try at a local curry retailer a few years ago, I have been hooked. Whenever my stomach will let me, I indulge my passion for this delightful dish. So it was with great interest that I got a shot at these pies, one of the newest in the Maketu range.

I wasn't 100% sure which cooking method I should go with, but because the Maketu's pastry has mostly held up well under nuking, and I don't like a dry pie, I went with slapping it onto the microwave for around 2 minutes at 50-60% power... I always prefer a longer, slower cooking to avoid scorched rim and frozen center. Once again, this tactic worked a treat.

When complete, I decided to serve this pie on a plate with a side-dish of pasta, and then I bit into curry heaven... the pastry was flakey but not falling apart in a hail of dust as some do. The filling was full of flavour but not too spicy, which made it nigh on perfect for me.

Overall, this one is SO close to beating out the Steak & Cheese as my all-time favourite...
