Palmerston North has at least 3 minigolf courses, and they all have their pros and cons... the last time I played minigolf was too long ago, and I recall that the course wasn't very well maintained, so it was a real pleasure to play on a well groomed, quite nifty course.

What really made this one stand out for me was that not only was it clear the course was being cared for well, when I noticed staff coming out to groom the holes between players, but also the care taken in the original layout and choice of construction materials, but also the whole design was really innovative. These holes has water traps and sand bunkers, all the rules were explained, posted on signs, and also on the scorecard.

With my son's birthday approaching, and no chance to share the actual day with him, it was great to take him out for his first game of minigolf. Now, you can't really expect a 6yr old to be a budding Tiger Woods on his first game, but considering the bunkers and traps were placed in all the right (or wrong Wink Icon) places, he did really well... which is a testiment to the design of the course.

Located, as it is, right next to the PN Airport, we also got some great sidetracks as various aircraft took off and landed, and we got to have a giggle at the beginners on the driving range next door, as they cursed at the lousy shots, and jump around like manmen as they made a good strike, sending the ball flying.

Though the leisureplex is a complex of different businesses sharing the one venue, and thus you are not (yet) able to buy a 'package deal', it was great to see that you were no more than 2 minutes from anything you could want, including the aforementioned driving range, and a 10-pin bowling alley, plus a delightful cafe.

Overall, I thought this was a great little minigolf range, with a full 18 holes, 9 indoors and 9 tougher ones outside, meaning that on foul-weather days, you could have fun regardless of the weather outdoors. The extra recreational options just made the location and variety available top-notch. So, if you have a few hours to spare, and want to do something different... give this minigolf course a go... I doubt you'll find any better within an hour's drive.

Product image for Deep BlueBased on the BBC/Discovery Channel series "The Blue Planet", in the most literal sense, you'll find no film goes deeper than this mesmerising documentary.

During one sequence, the camera plummets as far as 5,000 metres below the ocean to find some of the most extraordinary alien-like creatures you'll ever see - some of which are newly discovered species. After seeing this, it comes as no surprise to learn that more is known ... more...
