Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song product reviews

It's Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song's squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.

Christmas just isn't a Christmas if it doesn't have a Christmas Doctor Who special on boxing day. Add to that Peter Capaldi's version of the Doctor and the spectacular River Song and you have a fun, humorous and even heart warming episode. We've known since "Silence in the Library" & "Forest of the Dead" where River was heading and ads informed us to expect this to be her last adventure before those episodes. We open with a bit of a laugh and I love how the TARDIS was attempting to cheer up the Doctor (I shant give spoilers as to why he needed cheering up) and then his realization that River doesn't recognise him and he now gets to see a new side to her.

The plot is very straight forward, River wants a very rare diamond, uses her wit and wiles to gain it and then promptly finds danger, the Doctor gets to be the one to tag along for a change and we get to see what she gets up to when he doesn't notice (like taking the TARDIS for quick joyride). There's some great laughs, such as when the Doctor gets to pretend to be the one seeing inside the TARDIS for the first time and the robot which is chasing them.

The special features are fun to watch, there's the episodes trailer should you wish to view it again. Then we have an added feature which gives us Rivers background and her history through the season with am interview with Kingston. Last but not least there is the behind the scenes special which gives us fun titbits on moments such as the head on the dashboard and just what the snow was made out of, hint, it wasn't water....

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, good special effects, a fun plot that ticked all the boxes and a wonderful send off for the insatiable River Song. For any Doctor Who fan this is another must not miss episode.
