The Yeti Files: Monsters on the Run product reviews

Blizz Richards and his band of wacky cryptids are back for another illustrated adventure!

Everyone thinks the Loch Ness monster is one-of-a-kind. But that just means Nessie's lonely. And only yeti Blizz Richards and his team of cryptozoologists can help her find a friend just like her. With a little help from a time-traveling leprechaun, the gang travels back 65 million years to the age of dinosaurs to begin the search.

But they aren't ready for the dangers that wait for them: monstrously mean dinos. Giants with razor-sharp teeth. Terrifyingly cute little kitties. Can Blizz keep his team safe, or will they have to sacrifice everything to help Nessie find a friend?

I'm always on the lookout for books that might appeal to my picky 8 year old and this book looked like something he might enjoy - monsters and dinosaurs are right up his alley. In this book Blizz (the Yeti) and his crew travel 65 million years back in time to help Vanessa (the Lochness monster) find someone just like her.

This is the first book in the Yeti Files that we've read and while my son enjoyed it, I was left confused and underwhelmed. I felt like the story was very disjointed and rushed - it didn't flow in a way that was particularly easy to read and it was hard to follow at times. The illustrations are all in black and white and the style looks quite rough and somewhat basic but with all that being said, my son did enjoy it and has since taken off with it to add it to his bedtime reading pile.

There are moments of humour and plenty of action throughout which appealed to my son and even though I found it hard to read, he didn't seem to have a problem with it. I would say that it's aimed more at boys than girls and it would be of an easy level for early primary school children to read.

I am trying to encourage my daughters (7 and 5.5 years old) to appreciate a wider range of books. They both love monsters and dinosaurs so The Yeti Files latest book, Monsters on the Run, seemed like something that would interest them. We hadn't read the earlier book, Meet the Bigfeet, but that didn't matter. It was easy enough to follow on its own.

This is an easy read for your older primary school age child that is reluctant to pick up a book. It is probably aimed more at boys but any child with a love of monsters and dinosaurs will like it. I read it with my girls in one sitting. It was a bit too tricky for Miss 7 to read on her own especially as there were lots of dinosaur names but together it was great. Much of it went over her little sister's head but she enjoyed joining in for the screams and roars.

The story is about the monsters travelling back in time to find a friend for the Loch Ness monster. It is like a comic strip with only a few sentences of phrases each page which makes it both a quick read and relies a lot on the illustrations. This is a story that we probably won't read again for a while but hopefully in about a year Miss 7 will find it on the bookshelf, pick it up and read it by herself.
