My girls have long been fans of the original classic book "We're going a bear hunt" which was one of my first baby shower gifts and has remained well loved in our family ever since. For a country that doesn't have bears however its hard for children to relate and we have always discussed how sad the bear is at the end that the family didn't invite him in for tea.
"We're Going on a Moa Hunt" is a very well adapted and retold New Zealand version. We loved that right from the front cover there are illustrations of tree, bird, animal and insect life common to and native to New Zealand. I think half the fun of this book was looking for all the native New Zealand Flora and Fauna and identifying it. This is helped along by a little index on the back cover telling you what you can look for on each page. I love how every page had illustrations we could relate to and the changing of the words also makes it more applicable to the New Zealand my girls know and love.
My girls really love this book and have this great game now where they go for a Moa Hunt around our section and house and identify common items etc. This indicates to me that this book has resonated with them and they have made the connection between the native life in the book and that around them in our own backyard.
I really love this book and I think it is a great retelling of a classic story that may over time become just as well if not more loved. I can definitely recommend it and with Christmas coming up this could be a welcome addition to the Santa Sack.
