Sizzling Satire at the Speirs! - PC this show ain't!!
Senior students from PNBHS and PNGHS will set the Speirs Centre alight (no pun intended!) at the end of March with the colourful swing/jazz/gospel fusion which is HOT MIKADO. Featuring well known numbers such as Three Little Maids From School and Tit Willow, this take on Gilbert and Sullivan's original preserves the melodies and storyline while setting them in the 1940s and feasting on the costume, musical arrangements and dance styles of that era.
Hot Mikado is not a politically correct show! It delights in poking the borax at just about everyone - politicians, bureaucrats, the Americans, the Japanese-and perhaps all of us who take ourselves too seriously at times!
The cast will feature two members of the N.Z. Secondary Schools' Choir: Simon Kersten as Koko, the conniving and much put upon Lord High Executioner of Titipu; Hannah Darroch plays Katisha, the ageing, raging Diva frustrated by the attempts of the citizens of Titipu to keep her from ensnaring toyboy Nanki-Poo (Clinton Lauridsen). Thwarting her plans is the delectable Yum-Yum (Nickee Stephenson) assisted by her two mischievous schoolgirl sisters Pitti-Sing (Nicola Trotter) and Peep-Bo (Olivia Howan). Laid-back in a bloodthirsty kind of way is the Mikado (Yogesh Patel), the emperor of Japan. Nick Ross as Pooh-Bah is the pompous personification of overbearing bureaucracy and Willy Marshall is the manipulative Pish-Tush.
The 15 piece jazz band has been in rehearsal since October 2004 and includes students from Awatapu College, PNGHS and PNBHS plus some adults. Cast and Band have been in rehearsal since October 2004.

An AWESOME display of performance art ability , not that I would expect any less from another PNBHS production directed by the Legendary Chris Burton. This was a magnificent piece of work, months in the making, but the overall product was... WOW! Orchestrated mostly by the PNBHS Stage Band, conducted by the one and only Trevor Castle. With the sound for HOT MIKADO done by Audio Progress of Palmerston North, the sound quality was nothing short of excellent.
All round excellence with few faults, making the average score 8.5. But if I ever hear the words 'Oh Willow, Tit Willow, Tit.......Willow' again in my life it will be humorously too soon.
(You had to have seen the show to get it, sorry)
