A wonderful first dictionary suitable until around 10 years old. British spelling as opposed to American so good for Kiwi Kids! It has word activities on a number of the pages (answers in the very back), also larger images with parts named, such as a aircraft. Good concise definitions as well as variants of the word. Difficult words have pronunciation with them eg Cough *say koff.

The alphabet runs the side of the page and the letter of the page is coloured. There is a frequent word list in the back as well as months, days, numbers (in written form), measurement conversions (1 centimetre = 10 millimetres) and the start of analogue clock reading.

I would definitely recommend this book for a child starting school, my 5 year old is already using it and he hasn't been at school 6 months yet! It is also well priced retailing around $NZ30. A good starter dictionary that will last more than the first couple of years of school.

The Kingfisher First Dictionary is a fantastic first dictionary, that both my self and hubby are very impressed with. Miss nearly 5 and both my boys have really enjoyed this dictionary and we are glad to have it feature on our book shelf.

AS another reviewer said it is what it says, a dictionary. The pictures/illustrations are bright and colourful and not to confusing for little people. And my miss definitely feels like a big school girl when she recognizes pictures and pairs them with words. Her understanding has already increased tremendously which is fantastic, as she is soon to start school. Even master 9, who is struggling academically has found this one to be a huge help, and that is simply fantastic.

Master 10 has made the most of all the added extras as mentioned: tips on pronunciation, info on where words come from, word games and more.

I would highly recommend this as one for any kids collection! And think the price is absolutely perfect for how much learning can be achieved from this one simple book. A definite must have for primary school aged children and possibly even older, as some dictionaries are simply not engaging.

The Kingfisher First Dictionary is one that gets a big thumbs up from me and from Miss 4.5.

First and foremost it is what it says, a dictionary. It's all the extra bits that I love. The illustrations mean that Miss 4.5 is already enjoying reading through and learning what various things start with which letters. Given her current obsession with spelling this is great!

For older children there are also lots of other extras such as tips on pronunciation, bit of information about where words come from, word games that kids can play as well as plenty of other things.

I love how it makes this dictionary so interactive, it becomes more than just a basic resource book to get dusty on the shelf but instead something that I can see kids enjoying reading. I also love that because of the illustrations, even my daughter can already start to make use of the learning offered in it.

I'd highly recommend this as one for any kids collection!
