Superhuman - The Awesome Power Within product reviews

We live surrounded by technology that will see us through the 21st Century, and yet still inhabit bodies that were designed for the Stone Age. The biggest challenge for modern medicine is to reconcile the two.

Building on the success of the award-winning, landmark series The Human Body, this series shows what happens in the body when things go wrong and what can be done to put them right.

Superhuman combines spectacular images and cutting edge graphics, and investigates the work of pioneering doctors and patients prepared to put themselves on the line for new treatments.

The living body - of any creature - is a miracle of biological engineering. Whether it came about by inspired design, guided growth, or blind evolution, we still can't say... but what we can say is that the human body is one of the most amazing organic machines we know... and yet it still has so many faults and flaws - being a design that seems more in tune with a more primitive past than our technological today.

This series takes us inside ourselves and shows us not only what amazing things are already in place, but also gives us hints at how scientists are exploring ways to enhance the machine... forget your "Pimp My Ride" type upgrades, we're talking ways to super-charge the self-repair system into a full-fledge regeneration engine... we're talking chemical conditioning that will allow vastly improved control... we're talking super-human feats of skill being commonplace that make the abilities of today's supreme athletes mere child's play.

Presented by Robert Winston - the David Attenborough of science - and produced by Michael Mosley - a science documentary icon in his own right - this is a sure winner for all those who find the accumulation of knowledge to be a passionate pass-time.

Overall, another absolute stunner of a series, and one that I plan to watch again many times, and encourage my son to use as part of his home-schooling. Well worth the purchase price, this is a great resource for any science curriculum, though perhaps not suitable for the little ones as some key concepts will fly right over their heads, and some scenes may disturb.
