Having not seen this show before but knowing of the superman franchise, I was not quite sure what to expect. So I was pleasantly surprised that once it really got going it was really good, and I couldn't stop watching. It was a bit slow to get going, and I was honestly starting to think there was no way I was going to get through all 5 discs and complete this review, but then out of the blue, it just got better...and better, and better!
It is a great combination of drama, comedy and, yes dare I say it, love stories lol It is rated M as it contains violence. My 15 and 16 year old sons really enjoyed it, so much so, they were caught up at 1am on a Saturday night watching 'just one more episode' lol and my husband hardly moved on his days off from work as he had to play catch up to where every one else was at so no-one gave anything away hehe.
At the beginning you could tell it possibly was not a huge budget show, but as the season went on the sfx increased in quality. The story line is really one of its own with Superman himself making only a couple of cameo appearances, which I thought was great as any more appearances and he would have over shadowed the fact it was his cousins story not his. Clark Kents best friend from the daily planet is also a main character in this series with one major change, he is played by a darker man in this series, which took a little getting used t,o but only due to other superman series and films.
There are a few similarities between the original Superman and Supergirl; like working at a newspaper, common friends and their arrivals to earth, but each with slight differences to keep the two separate. There is a good cast, that seem to work together well, making it more enjoyable to watch. One of my favorite lines was from the newspaper owner (Calista Flockhart) "tell Harrison Ford I am not interested in dating him, hes too old and married" lines like this, made the otherwise obviously not believable concept that whole lot more real.
The villains in this series are not too nasty by today's standards but they fit perfectly into their roles. I do'nt know if they continued making this series or not, but I for one am going to find out as I am keen to see where this show goes. I enjoyed it as did the rest of the family. In fact I am pretty sure they have started watching it again lol
