The cover of Slug Needs a Hug immediately appealed to me. Sure it was a catchy title and the whole idea of a slimy pest like a slug needing a hug is intriguing. It was the the distinctive style of Tony Ross's illustrations that did it for me. Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross have been creating books together for a long time. I was first introduced to them over twenty years ago when my Teachers' College lecturer read us a Dr Xargle book. I went out and bought all the books in the series and still have them. I have shared them many times with my classes over the years and now with my own children and they all love them.
Slug needs a hug is a very cleverly written book where a little slug is very sad because his mum won't hug him. My clever five year old and her 6.5 year old sister knew straight away why she couldn't hug him. The three 3.5 year olds I read this to didn't work it out. They felt very sorry for the little slug as they know how good a hug feels.
It is a very funny book that has slug changing his appearance so his mum will love him. When he does find mum at the end of the book she struggles to recognise him and the wee slug discovers that it is impossible to hug without arms but a kiss is just as good.
This is lovely to read with your child curled up on your lap. It encourages you to hug them and let them know how much you love them. A great bedtime story.
