When I first picked up the book and started reading straight away my heart went out to Edie and the life she was living. It started out as feeling like a typical poor little orphan story. Sent off to live with family who don't really want her and cousins who treat her terribly . Once the scene is set though the story quickly changes.
Edie is saved from the life she hates and sent off to Knight's Haddon boarding school. She is sent to keep a watchful eye on the daughter of a Russian prince. Knight's haddon has it own challenges though and Edie soon finds herself caught up in lots of mystery.
The Glass Bird Girl is a book I am glad I stuck with and read even though to begin with I thought it was just another typical orphan story, If I had of put it down after the first couple of chapters I would of missed on a really enjoyable story. I plan to now hand the book on to my 11 year old niece and I think she will enjoy it as much as I did. I will be keeping an eye out on other stories by Esme Kerr as she is a wonderful author.

Miss11 has been reading this. She cried in the first chapter when the boys were cruel to Edie, never seen her do that before. Asking her about the book she said she likes it because... "You don't expect what is coming and it is realistic." By realistic she means that things like rules at the boarding school and not just the usual midnight feasts of other books.
The girls have nicknames for the teachers and principal. The teachers are not all nice, in other books there is usually just one nasty teacher but in this story there are lots. She thinks the story appeals to girls 10-12 yrs, not younger as there are some harder words used that she had to look up. She enjoyed being challenged by this.
The cover is not a cover that would make her pick the book up. She thinks it doesn't match the book or what is in her imagination. It makes the book look like the story would be very girlie when it isn't. The blurb on the back doesn't tell much about the story or set the scene for the reader.
She would recommend the book to friends and would look for other books by the same author.
