Shaolin Soccer product reviews

With tons of action, great special effects and non-stop laughs, here's a hilarious martial arts comedy about an oddly mismatched band of brothers who take their best shot at winning a championship!

Sing is an exceptionally skilled Shaolin Kung fu devotee who's fallen on hard times when his amazing 'leg of steel' catches the eye of an equally downtrodden soccer coach! Together they decide to assemble a squad of Sing's former Shaolin brothers with hopes of capturing the big-money prize in a national soccer competition!

Using an unlikely mix of Shaolin-inspired martial arts and newfound soccer skills, it all seems an unbeatable combination - until they must face the dreaded Team Evil in the ultimate battle for the title! As eye-popping action teams with outrageous comedy, you're sure to get a kick out of this unusual movie treat!

This movie was like a savoury omlette... cheesy, corny and full of ham! I TOTALLY LOVED IT! It made no attempt to take itself seriously, with impulsive musical dance scenes, fugues into dreamspace that snapped back to reality suddenly, leaving the characters undressing from their alter-ego costumes while continuing with the dialog, piss-take referrals to other movies, etc.

If you want a serious kung-fu movie, go hire out some Bruce Lee or Jacky Chan titles, but if you liked such titles as 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' or 'House of Flying Daggers' then you'll enjoy the overdone kung-fu moves in here (such as kicking a soccer ball so hard it starts to burn up from air friction, or a big fat guy walking on air using Shaolin Lightweight Technique, etc). With comedy, romance, action, battles of good vs evil (Team Evil in fact!), this has a little something for everyone.

Overall, this would have to be the funniest kung-fu movie I have ever seen. No others tickled my sense of humour the way this one did... it's almost enough to make me want to take up soccer! The closing credits have a great soundtrack, with a kickin' remix of 'Kung Fu Fighting' leading the chase... I caught myself chair-dancing with some of the old martial arts moves creeping in... much to the disgust of my drink, which caught a side-block and leapt to the floor with amazing staining ability. -sigh- ah well, it was worth it! :)

A bit of trivia for you:
The Shaolin goalkeeper is a humorous homage to martial arts legend Bruce Lee. H develops a Lee-style haircut and wears a Game of Death (1978) yellow jumpsuit. When he is carried off, he also wears the big-lens sunglasses Lee was famous for wearing. As he is carried off, dead, he lies in exactly the same fashion as Bruce Lee laid when he was in his coffin in Hong Kong.
