The Last Stand product reviews

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction.

But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.

I was lucky enough to win a prize pack in KIWIreviews Birthday Bash from Roadshow and this was one of the DVDs. I suggested to my partner that we sit down Friday night and watch one. I said he could pick, and this was what he selected. I was disappointed as out of all the DVDs this was the one I would of watched last! But we watched it.

The beginning was a little typical and the thought of Arnie in any movie makes me want to run and hide! But he was actually awesome. It wasn't your usual Arnie scenes. I feel that like cheese, he has got better with age! He plays a local sheriff after leaving big city, high profile crime. He now works in a little town that sees very little crime.

After the first 15 minutes of so, I had closed my laptop and the film had my undivided attention. Its a pretty action packed enjoyable film, its not too comical and the comedy kicks in just when needed. I'm not Jonny Knoxville's biggest fan either, I find him irritating and silly but he did provide the right amount of comic relief without over riding the storyline or other characters.

The film is not that predictable and the car chase scenes are fantastic. I like that the sleepy town wins over in the end, makes it a feel good movie! There are subtle links that get carried through the film which makes it feel a little but more polished than one would of thought from the cover.

I have lent this out to my dad now, it was that good I'm sharing it around! It ended up being an excellent choice for a Friday nights entertainment.

I sat down to watch The Last Stand with my husband. We both expected it to be similar to Kindergarten Cop where there is as much comedy as action. It is not. There are only a few comic lines and at one point I cried. (I certainly didn't expect to have this movie tug at my heart strings.) One thing that was very effective was the use of total silence at the peak of an action scene. This grabbed my attention more than any of the gunshots, or screeching tyres.

The plot is very predictable. A small town sheriff (played by Arnie) has his quiet town invaded by an escaped convict and his accomplices. He enlists the help of a weapons enthusiast (Knoxville) to help him. Arnie's character isn't the super fit man that he wouldhave played prior to becoming Governor and there are references to him feeling old. The guns and vehicles do most of the work for him. The is however one scene that is very physical.

The movie is a true action movie with flash cars, police chases, and of course the inevitable crashes. There is plenty of shooting scenes with a very high death rate most from multiple gunshot wounds. There were several times I leaped out of my seat with fright and others where I winced to see limps flying around. This is definitely rated R16 for a reason.

A word of advice from the movie if you park your flash sports car in the wrong place and the Police tell you to move it, it pays to do so.

Product image for Scary Stories To Tell In The DarkPennsylvania, 1968. Change is blowing in the wind, but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It was in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories. These stories were recorded in a book that has transcended time - stories that have a ... more...
