Lotus Lane 2: Coco - My Delicious Life product reviews

My daughter picked this book to be next for bedtime reading. This book is in the style of a primary school aged child's diary. Inside the pages are lined and the font is like nice and friendly handwriting or hand printing. At first I found the style, with the lines quite hard to read but eventually I got into the flow.

There are lots of computer style illustrations in the book. They mostly look a bit like clip art. This is similar styling to many other children's novels. All the characters live fairly close to each other, go to the same school and have rhymed names like the three besties, Kiki, Coco and Lulu. There is the classic bully as well as a little "is she a bully or not?" drama with a new girl.

The main plot of the story is saving some snails. Coco's dad appears to be a scientist or environmentalist. Either way, he is on a trip to save some snails and she decides to help him by fundraising to set up a new snail habitat. They do a bake sale and in the process make a new friend and learn a bit more about each other.

I did like Coco a lot. She bakes (we bake), she loves cream cheese icing (nom nom nom) and she cares about the planet and nature (something my daughter is very keen on). I did find her family a bit far fetched. All of them have names which are a variation on Nick. Best bit of the book was the Coco Cupcake recipe which we totally made on the weekend and they were yum. Though the icing was a bit sweet for my eldest. I don't think I have ever seen her waste icing before, so that was weird. Great book and we can't wait to read Kiki and then see about the other two in the series.
