Rock climbing is a very social sport, it's all about having a good time and as we cater for all ranges of experience and ability, you can push yourself as much or as little as you want at the Extreme Edge - New Zealand's largest & newest indoor climbing gyms.
No membership is required, no experience is necessary and all first-timers get a free safety lesson from one of our experienced instructors. They'll teach you how to be safe at the wall, how to use our state of the art equipment and give you some pointers on which area of our massive facility will probably suit you best.
Now, don't be scared by the word "Gym" that we used earlier, anyone and everyone can have a good time here. You can keep fit and get stronger and more flexible without even realising it's happening! We're pretty sure that's the only kind of gym that should be allowed.

My husband and I took our two girls (4.5 and 3 years) to the Hamilton Extreme Edge. As only the kids were climbing we were only charged $6.50 for each of them and it was a great was for them to get some exercise on a drizzly day. It kept them entertained for an hour but we were able to leave and return throughout the day if we wished.
My girls are both very adventurous climbers when they go to a playground but I felt they were very safe climbing here even when they were 5 metres up in the air. Safety is the number one priority at Extreme Edge. When we arrived we were asked if we had been before (none of us had). We were also asked to read the rules and sign them. The instructor then fitted the girls with their harnesses and instructed us on how to clip them on to the line and things to watch out for. He then pointed us to the walls which would be the easiest for them to start on.
We only went into the Climbzone part of the facility because our kids were so young. The room was filled with colourful and fun climbing walls. Some of the easier climbs were basically like climbing a ladder. I was amazed how well my girls did and they reached the top on a few of them. There were a few they wanted to climb because they looked fun but soon found out the handholds were a bit further apart than the simple ones. I think they had as much fun coming down the automatic belay lines as they did climbing up.
My older daughter got much more out of it than her sister so I think next time I will just take her. I'll probably take the little one when she is nearly four. I will also take a water bottle for each of us as we all got quite thirsty, but we will definitely be returning.
