Dirty Bertie is very loved at my Miss Fours kindergarten where they have the picture books. This was a step up to move to a chapter book but an easy transition as she already knows and loves Dirty Bertie. Dertie Bertie is a very naughty and gross but also very likeable boy.

This book contains three stories, Bogeys! Potty! and Magic! Each story is separated into chapters (between 4 - 8 pages) and almost every page has a black and white picture related to the text.

This book is a great transition from picture books to chapter books and would appeal to age four and up first to read with them and then later when they are learning to read themselves. Research shows that children benefit from reading with picture prompts until about age 10. For this reason this book will probably be reread in our house for many years.

I think Dirty Bertie probably really appeals to boys but the stories are quite good. I am not a fan of Miss Boot who isn't a very nice teacher! But then we probably all remember a teacher who was a little like Miss Boots....

Of the three stories "Bogeys! and Magic!" were my favourite.

Bogeys! is a great story to warn your child of the perils of nose picking and gives you a good code word when out and about with the the stray finger. (Saying "Dirty Bertie!" is far less noticeable then "get that finger out of your nose!" when in a cafe. )

This book is great and if you don't mind a book that isn't all "nice" you will enjoy Bertie's exploits.
