My son and I have always enjoyed any variant of Battleships, from 'draw your own on paper' through to the far more interactive Battleship - Torpedo Attack, so this was going to be an interesting 'book' for us to try out...
Originally, I thought it would be great on long drives, but of course, I'm the driver so it's not a smart idea, however it would be good for those regular rest stops and leg-stretchers on the shores of Lake Taupo. (Strangely enough, Daddy always starts getting sore legs as we get close to Waiouru and Taupo.
) The magnetic pieces make this a great option during times of motion, such as long drives, trips on planes or trains, or even -shudder- crossing the strait on one of the ferrys.
The design of the board was quite clever, with it's ability to fold down into the book, or fold up to provide two playing boards and a divider... I was quite impressed. Even though my son was more interested in the game, he still found it interesting to read some of the facts on battle ships through the ages.
Overall, for the price, you aren't going to find a more flexible, portable and effective Battleships game. The 'extras' aren't bad, but the main point of this is that it's a game, and a fun one at that. I especially liked the fact that you got a true fleet... not just one of each ship. Each player gets 1 aircraft carrier, 2 battleships, 3 submarines and 4 destroyers, giving you a decent game of 10 ships covering 21 squares to aim for. Well worth the already-inexpensive pricetag.
