Driving around, trying to find some yummy food... a friend suggested that we try this place, as she had enjoyed her previous visit, and suggested the $6.80 Fish Meal. After much humm'ing and hah'ing over the options, we decided on crumbed fish, and a 50/50 mix of kumara chips and home-made chips, tartare sauce for me, sweet 'n' sour sauce for her.
We got two large pieces of fish, which was cooked well, and it was real fish with a crumb coating, not processed fish pulp stamped out by the thousands. The chips were delightful, with the home-made ones indeed being very tasty, as suggested by the lady who served us.
There was a nice coleslaw on the side, with a reasonable but slightly bland mayo dressing... obviously mass-produced but quite tolerable. I was quite impressed with the also obviously-mass-market tartare sauce, as it was of a noticably higher standard than the usual crud on offer at other stores.
Overall, for $6.80 each, it was a wonderful meal, very filling and somewhat healthier than the usual run-of-the-mill fast food, primarily because of the kumara chips, the crumbed fish option, and the near-total lack of cooking oil... vege oil at that I must add. Well worth a visit, and if the rest of their fare is of this high standard and generous portions, they are an excellent option. I plan to go back and 'assess' their burger skills, as I pride myself on knowing a good burger when I eat one. ![]()
Only downside is the lousy parking available, but if you are smart, there are plenty of side-streets that are reasonably empty after 5.30pm, and a 2min walk never hurt anyone. ![]()

There is something reassuringly generous about serving up whole lamb shanks, and in terms of taste they are hard to beat. Beak & Sons' succulent lamb shanks have been coated in a garlicky sauce laced with zingy rosemary, and slow cooked until the meat is sweet, aromatic, and ready to fall off the bone. Just heat them and cover them in the luscious glaze before serving. Perfect paired with creamy mash. This is the ultimate comfort ... more...
