The Last Ship product reviews

In the epic drama The Last Ship, a global catastrophe has nearly decimated the world's population. The Navy destroyer USS Nathan James avoids falling victim to the devastating virus; the crew and its captain must find a way to pull humanity from the brink of extinction.

Based on William Brinkley's popular novel, The Last Ship is a riveting, action-packed drama starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin.

The Last Ship comes to TNT from blockbuster-filmmaker Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and its partners, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Bay, Fuller and Form serve as executive producers; along with creator-show runners Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane; and executive producer Jack Bender.

The cover of "The Last Ship" DVD set and the synopsis of the series caught my attention and made me think it was something that my husband and I would enjoy. It took the first few episodes for me to get involved in the series. I was actually wondering if I would get hooked at all and or it I would lose interest. By the time I got to the second disc, I was becoming invested in the plot and was very keen to continue watching. There was less monotony of scenery - the first number of episodes are set mostly the ship. Subsequent episodes moved to other locations. My husband felt the same way. The interesting thing is that when I popped online to see what other people were saying, I didn't get the same vibe at all from their statements - people seemed to love the series (I assume straight from the beginning). I guess my husband and I just reacted a bit differently. I would like to point out that if you react the same way that we did, it is worth sitting through the initial episodes as I am pretty sure, like us, you will get hooked and extremely disappointed when the series ends and you are left waiting for the next series to be available to you on TV or DVD!

The sound effects and music throughout the episodes are full of energy and drama. They certainly caught my attention. There is also great cinematography which helps create emotion between the characters and events and also create a sense of urgency. Mixed in with the action and drama as little hints of love stories. Relationships of various types are developed between the characters as they interact. It will be interesting to see how they develop in the next series.

There are 3 DVD discs in the set and a total of ten episodes. I liked the DVD case as inside it there is a brief synopsis of each episode. It is nice to have a clue about what will happen in each episode.

There is a typical navy feeling to the movie and the idea that the Americans will save the world from the deadly virus. They are given a hero status and the music and cinematography support this feeling throughout the series. It was great that there were some surprises for us in the storyline - at the beginning I thought it was all going to be a bit predictable. There is a bit more to it than simply finding the cure to the virus!

Although I was disappointed that the series finished, I think that it was at a logical place, the initial mission was sorted but it left us hanging in order to create enough interest to want to watch the next series. Now that I have grown to really enjoy the series, I can't wait to source the next series. I wonder how I will get hold of that?
