We love Derek Danger Dale at our house. This series of books is like reading a slapstick cartoon show like Phineas and Ferb or Get Smart. The layout is like a comic strip, but with blocks of prose. Each chapter usually leads into a scene change and we get data about the where and when before the story continues.

In this book, yet again Dr Evil McEvilness strikes again. Another dastardly device and another death defying adventure for Derek. In this book we are introduced to ninjas as well. As my husband says, everything is better with ninjas. From the first introduction it is obvious that the leader of the ninjas has romantic almost stalker intentions towards Derek. As an adult it was funny to watch them interact. She being obviously interested and him being completely oblivious to it. However, Miss 8 didn't pick up on the crush motif until later on.

A lot of the comedy in this book is more obvious to the reader than the listener, so I had to get her to sit with me and look at the words, so she could see why I was laughing. It's a lot of conversational stuff, with one-liners and puns interlaced. It's very clever and enjoyable to read. Meanwhile Miss 8 just loves the excitement and adventure of Derek.

This time around, there were a few nervous moments for us reading along. One moment where Miss 8 protested loudly that they weren't being very fair to Derek. But better still, lots and lots of laughs. Derek's boss is so silly. The ending was surprising and funny again too. It had us laughing our heads off. It is so neat to share laughter like that with my kid. I can see us re-reading this over and over, especially as Miss 3 gets more into story time with us.
