Like all weka, Aroha is curious and smart. When her tastebuds lead her into trouble, she finds herself snatched from her peaceful home in Grey and carried across the countryside. Alone in this strange new place, what is one young weka to do?
Follow her instincts and find her way home, of course. Her journey takes her through farmland and swamp, across rivers and over mountains. Many dangers and other challenges face her but with courage and determination, one weka can go a long way.
Aroha is a cheeky character, and her adventures should appeal to children aged seven and up. Adventure and humour mingle together into an appealing, fast-paced read. As everything is (roughly) based on fact, there are also several educational appendices.

Ever wondered about our various native birds, how they might talk and act, well this is a fun book that gives some fabulous ideas as to what they may be thinking, how they would talk if we could understand them etc. Aroha is a Weka who has an appetite for human food and one day this gets her into trouble, she is snatched from her home in Grey and must work her way home.
This is a lovely and well written book. It was easy to imagine Miss Aroha and all the birds that she meets on her journey and I could see these birds acting that way in real life. For those who may not know who all the birds are there is a section at the end of the book to give a quick summary not only on the different birds in the book, but also the places in New Zealand the Aroha travels through and a little bit of our history.
I think that this is a great book to read, mostly as it's a New Zealand book through and through (I'm allowed to be biased, right?) but it's a lovely story about a plucky young weka who simply won't give up till she's back home.

It's the night before Rose's mum re-marries. Rose can't sleep for worrying and nor can her muddled Great-Aunt Cosy, her namesake. Rose sees the old lady leaving the house and runs after her to the London underground. Their empty train stops in 1940, in a war-torn London broken by the Blitz.
Here, Rose witnesses great romance and impending sacrifice. Tragedy will surely follow-unless she can change what happens next...
