Despite enjoying some of the food on offer, I found the majority of it dull, unappealing and somewhat bland.
That was until they introduced their Steak Meal, and re-introduced the Hot Meat Sandwiches and Rolls. The steak, though a touch tough due to slight overcooking, was full of flavour, and the plate was liberally piled with extras such as a couple of fried eggs, some sausage, chips, salad (coleslaw) and sauces. Quite a filling meal.
When trying their sandwiches, I was impressed at the content, a big slab of meat (beef or lamb) and my choice of 3 salad fillings. The taste was dramatically improved however when I dolloped it with some tartare sauce, located handily right where they hand over the food. For an extra $1.00 I could have had chips as well.
"So why the low scores?" you may ask... simple. It took over 10 minutes just to describe to the server what I wanted in my sandwich! "Wholemeal bread, lamb in thick slices, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber please" seems to translate roughly into "Only bread and lamb, act thick, and I want coleslaw." somehow.
I am a firm believer in "Citizens of the Same Planet" instead of nationalities, but if you want to live and work in our society, how about learning more than the very bare minimum basics of our language please! If you want our money, and we want your food, we need to be able to communicate properly. The burden of learning is upon YOU, not us!
Another issue I had was their slack Hygiene protocols. Make DAMN sure that BEFORE they serve you they change gloves. I watched one staff member make a salad with his bare hands while rubbing his nose. (Strangely enough, I refused to eat the salad.) On another occasion I watched a staff member stick their finger into a dish of food, suck the finger clean, and then proceed to do it again in the next dish... apparently checking the temperature! If it was cool enough not to burn his finger, it wasn't hot enough to comply with OSH and MAF Standards surely.
However, after a word with the staff concerned, and the shop manager, when they see me coming now they make damn sure their gloves are fresh and they aren't touching food with bare skin anywhere. If you value your health, ensure they treat you the same.
Overall, I will continue to eat there, but only for the food. As for the staff, the less I deal with them the happier we'll all be. Hell, let me make my own food and you can charge me whatever you like. At least I know I'll get what I ordered.
