I was super glad that I had book number 2 - Fearless - waiting to read as soon as I finished reading book number 1 - Reckless - because I was really excited to continue reading the fantasy adventure of Jacob Reckless and his shapeshifting companion Fox.
Wow I was not disappointed. This book was brilliant. Cornelia weaves each vivid detail together with delicacy, resulting in the reader being left stunned. Oh, how I want to visit the Mirrorworld! Each word painted a picture in my mind and left me craving more. Magical. The story Fearless was magical.
In my opinion, normally, a book like this would suffer from second in the series syndrome....But Fearless was, well fearless! Not only was the writing just beautiful, but the plot was exhilarating! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a book of this genre so much! Jacob's story is one of love, loyalty, magic and danger! I found it very hard to put the book down...well actually it was completely unputdownable. With each chapter bringing a new round of excitement and enchantment, it was difficult not to get enthralled in Reckless' world. I spent the whole day reading the book, I didn't put it down until I had read the last word!
I did however find a couple of pages were a bit confusing, and it was easy to lose the thread at points, but Cornelia's luxurious language made up for that. Some chapters began with short phrases that immediately conjured up fantastical images; for instance, 'Elven dust and red wine'. Even in the mirrorworld fairytale characters knew how to enjoy themselves!
For Fearless to make much better sense I do recommend that you read Reckless first so you understand the background of the story lines, if Reckless isn't read first the reader will become confused in places. I really recommend both books! I will keep my fingers crossed for another book in the series!! I can't wait to see what Jacob's next adventure will be!
This was my first introduction to Jacob Reckless. In truth I should have picked up the Reckless book first, but I was tired when I started to read this book and thought I had selected the first one. As a result, there were moments of confusion for me as the author assumes you have read the first book. There are some re-caps but the story mostly assumes you know all the backstory. Whoops!
This book is about Jacob Reckless and his struggle to save his own life after being cursed. The curse has already happened and now its a fight against time. Reckless is a treasure hunter, and so this has a bit of the Indiana Jones about it. He is also a traveller from our world into a fantasy/fairy tale style world. So it has traces of The tenth Kingdom and Once Upon a Time about it. This made it a good read to me, as I love that sort of thing.
I liked that we got to ride along with all the characters at some point, including the "baddie". It helped you understand their motives and what they thought of everything going on. The book has everything from love, danger, adventure, comedy and everything in-between. The author does a good job of building the world and revealing Reckless' anxiety. There is a lot of tension, and it was hard to put down. The author is quite flowery in her description of things, so that did take me a bit to get my head around, but once in it was a very enjoyable read.
