Hollie Chips product reviews

When Hollie Chips and her mum move to Puriti Road, Hollie is baffled by the way her neighbours all keep to themselves.

But Hollie is a remarkable little girl, and it isn't long before she has charmed her way into their lives - and when she discovers that a dastardly businessman is trying to buy up their houses to bulldoze them and build a dog food factory (which he has told them will be an orphanage!), the neighbours have to band together with Hollie and her mum to outwit him!

Hollie Chips is the story of young Hollie - an unusual girl who is very intelligent and cannot lie. She is charming from page one, reminding me a little of Matilda, a favourite book of mine growing up. Although Hollie does not have real magic, she performs a little spell of her own in finding perceptive ways to engage the lonely neighbours in the comunity, transforming their lives for the better and saving her beloved street in the process. That was one of my favourite things about this book, the uplifting yet simple innocence. It certainly deserved the 2009 Tom Fitzgibbon Award.

Great for children, whether reading it themselves or as a bedtime story. Possibly more for young girls as the hero is female, but this is definitely not a 'girly' story. I loved it, quite simply, and cannot recommend it enough.
