A mercenary making his money smuggling things from one place to another gets hired to transport a young woman from a convent in a cold desolate area in Russia to the USA. Like always, smuggling is a dangerous business. And as always, smuggling live people is even more dangerous.

Part action sequences, part message, part unexplained background. This film has some good portions of the first, but too much of the last if you ask me. It would have been better if they added about 30 minutes and explained some of the 'current' state of the Earth and gave some more background to the various characters. That in itself though does not make it bad. Not at all.

Most of the film is in fact pretty decent. It is easy to watch, easy to follow and most of it makes a tiny bit of sense, just enough to be interesting really. It isn't great though. It doesn't stand out from the crowd in any way and that is simply because it forgets to explain some of its background and that is a damned shame.

Directed by Michael Radford

Product image for 1984A powerful adaptation of George Orwell's 1984.

After the Atomic War the world is divided into three states. London, the capital of Oceania, is ruled by a party who has total control over all its citizens. Winston Smith is one of the bureaucrats, rewriting history in one of the departments.

One day he commits the crime of falling in love with Julia. They try to escape Big Brother's listening and viewing devices, but, of course, nobody can really escape...
