'Well, you probably won't believe me if I say it's a snake - a huge, child-swallowing anaconda,' said the librarian. A child visits the library with their mum, who tells them to find a book and stay out of trouble. Almost immediately, the librarian warns the child against doing certain things, like climbing the shelves, peeling up the carpet, or taking a particular book. Growing up I was a bookworm, every Friday night we had a tradition where my parents would drive me to the library to get the maximum number of books to borrow, the majority of which would be finished within a few days. Ever since my children were babies I have read books to them, and they too have now developed a love for reading, When I was offered a copy of 'Why Not?' to review I was excited, the small school I work at was lucky enough to meet the author Swapna Haddow at our local library, where she read to the pupils. When it came time to read 'Why Not?', the cover of the book had the children fascinated and brainstorming ideas of what they thought was going to be happening at the library that involved a girl, a bear, some birds, a snake and a pirate, some of the children thought that maybe some stories came to reality. As we turned the pages we get introduced to a young girl who is visiting the library with her mum, mum is using the computer and tells the girl to stay out of trouble. Whenever the girl was going to do something the librarian would say to her "I wouldn't do that..." and the girl would respond with the question "Why Not?" and so the librarian would reply with a far-fetched story. The majority of the children thought that the pirate was by far the highlight of the story with his big, long nose and his love of unicorns. I personally liked the last scenario that the librarian told the girl, as it would definitely be a chaotic situation, if in fact the girl ignored the librarians words, and gave the item a tug. Overall the book was an absolute hit with the children, and this has become a favourite read. I highly recommend this author as she has a way of writing children's stories that engage the children to use their imagination. |
