Review #22878 - Dated: 17th of September, 2023 Author: mizim |
My 14 year old fell in love with Heartstopper after watching the first season on Netflix, and then getting the first two books as a prezzie. Naturally I ended up buying her the next two in the series for Christmas last year, which she was delighted with, but I’ve only just sat down to read them after the second season came out on Netflix and has already been rewatched half a dozen times. I actually found myself enjoying the first two in the series, so with a bit of quiet time, I figured why not read the next one? “Oh. You’re being gay. Good job, carry on”. Nick and Charlie are growing as a couple and dealing with your usual high school drama and the added drama that comes from being different.
Again, big topics are brought up in this series. We have an eating disorder touched upon and a homophobe apologizing and expecting things to just be OK (I love that the character was able to stand up and state that they did not need to give forgiveness or be ambushed into accepting an apology). The LGBT+ characters just keep on popping up in this series and I love it. At this point I’m not actually sure who, in the list of characters we know by name, isn’t bi, gay, trans or whatever. I will be reading book number four in the series, and I think by this point that I’m just going to have to give up and watch it come to life on my TV screen.
