As the result of the curse of a once-beautiful witch (Meryl Streep), a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) are childless. Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch's beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of gold. During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish. |

Into the Woods caught me out. I was enticed by the all star cast (which included Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Johnny Depp plus many more) featured in the trailer but somehow I didn't notice it was a musical. Not that I mind musicals but my partner didn't look too impressed when they began singing! Into the Woods features most of the childhood fairytales blended together to created a new story of a baker and his wife who can't have a baby unless they find items that a witch (Streep) demands. This brings together characters and elements from well-known stories like Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf (Depp), Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Jack and the Giant, to name a few. The songs, while not instant hits, had a catchy rhythm which suited the pace of the movie and often combined characters singing different parts, which I particularly enjoyed. The set and costumes were impressive, adding to the "dark" atmosphere that's usually present in so-called fairy tales. What I didn't like about the film was the length, it was just too long. I certainly found my attention wandering about three quarters of the way into the film and wishing it would end. I also found some of the story elements odd and unnecessary. This was a shame, as the idea of blending the fairy tale characters together was great in essence but I think the writers spent too long in the woods and went off on the wrong track. While I'm glad I saw it and I was impressed with the actors' singing and performances, I would not choose to see this again. |

I had wanted to see this when it came out but finances at the time meant I couldn't and since then I just hadn't gotten around to seeing it. Tonight I decided to a movie, junk food night with my kids and this was my pick. Straight away we jump into a musical number and thus an intro of what everyone wishes for, which was really well done. The cast is full of known actors, plus a few newcomers, who played their roles well. Johnny Depp suited his role as the wolf very well, just the right sort of character for him to play, though I also loved Chris Pines version of the Prince and I felt him to be perfect in that role. I liked the fact that though this is a Disney film, it didn't stick to the typical "happy ending " and sticks a bit closer to the original versions of the fairy tales, but without being too gruesome, after all it is a family movie. For example, you know the stepsisters are getting a bit of their foot chopped off but you don't see it happen, and then what happens to Rapunzels love... The overall plot is well done, and again, I like that everything isn't perfect in their world and things do go wrong in the relationships after they get their hearts desire. With plenty of humour for both young and old there's plenty to entertain, I didn't find the songs hugely catchy or leave me wanting to listen to them again and again but they all fitted in perfectly. The kids and I enjoyed this and we'd all happily watch this again. |

Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapuzel are all living in the same kingdom backing on to the 'woods' in this amazing musical. I could not believe the famous names that kept popping up and singing in this very witty, well made movie from Disney. I loved it and found it so entertaining. This is not just for children as it had a lot of 'adult humour' in it and I found both my husband and I laughing out loud where as it was competly over our girls heads. There is an element of magic to the movie which my youngest found exciting and my eldest enjoyed all of the princess love stories. Giants, Witches, Bean Stalks, Cows and even a Wolf. It's full of surpises and has a big budget feel to it. Prince Charming reveals he was taught to be charming but not sincere and the wolf lets you know how easy it is to be kind to someone when you know they will be your dinner very shortly. I loved all the twists this movie had. Not all the songs are fantastic and I don't think I will be singing along to any of them soon but I really enjoy it when a variety of people are singing different lyrics to the same piece of music. Also some of the songs last for a very long time but I never got tired of them so that is a plus. I loved how the beautiful but ugly sisters tried on the golden slipper. How there mother 'made sure' that it would fit in such a thoughful way but I am still stuck as to how the prince could not figure it out. Brains was not a requirement to be part of this kingdom. I also really enjoyed the blame song because when it came to it there are a lot of people you can blame for all of there predictaments. Really a fun, enjoyable movie that is worth a watch on a day you just need to blob out with. |
