I haven't read any of Henning Mankell's previous Kurt Wallander mysteries but having reviewed The Shadow Girls thought it would be interesting to read a different genre by Mankell. This is a short story indeed a novella rather than a long novel. It is however all the better for it. I really enjoyed reading this. It is a very quick mystery read and a very enjoyable one at that. I especially enjoyed the afterword and the accompanying essay on the Wallander stories. My interest is piqued to such an extent that I may try and read the entire series chronologically and also intend to read more of Mankells works. If you are already a Wallander fan then this book will, of course, be a must for you to read and I imagine that any true fan will very much enjoy the essay at the end. I am a very loyal fan of authors that choose to share a little about the life behind their works. For me understanding the authors thought processes in bringing character's alive on the written page creates a unique depth to their final works and to my enjoyment and understanding of them. This is a very well written mystery that is very easy to read and indeed very engaging. Perfect for Fathers Day or as a birthday or Christmas gift this is a book that will very much appeal to any fan of crime novels and mystery. |
