This is a rhyming story about a pohutukawa tree that grows down by the 'sleepy, blue sea'. Bees, tui, geckoes and bats all feed on the tree, but the possum threatens the life of the tree, until a boy comes to the rescue and catches the pest. The cycle of life continues and the seeds of the tree are blown to the ground. New seedlings spring up and soon there are more trees by the sleepy blue sea.

Every day my children point to this book with wide eyes and beaming smiles asking me to read it to them, and every day I happily do. Pohutukawa by Sandra Morris is full of so many things related to New Zealand, which makes it unique in itself. Based on the life cycle of our beloved Pohutukawa tree, the animals and insects that thrive on the life of that tree, and how one seed can help grow another, it made miss eight stop and question, how can one small seed can grow into such an enormous and beautiful tree with very little help. The illustrations are simply bold and beautiful, they catch your eye with next to no effort and draw you into this world that Sandra Morris helped to create.

This book is one that both young and old enjoy reading together, and will be passed on to the next generation of children, who will look and see what beauty we have and are blessed to be around. Although hard to find in New Zealand book stores, if you do find a copy, buy it, hold onto it, read it and let your imagination take you away to a serene and calm place that many have been to before.

Overall, beautiful, unique and one that will become a kiwi icon for generations to come, Pohutukawa is a must have for all kiwis living at home and overseas.
