I had never read any fantasy books, so when i picked this up the first time i want to say i was pleasantly surprised at how engaging it was, but that is a mere understatement! I was so TOTALLY ENGROSSED in the book, i read it front to back almost non stop! And couldn't wait to start the next!

This is the first part in a three part series. Philip Pull man is slowly becoming very well known for this series, that is now being studied at university level. It sits right up there with Narnia, The Hobbit and Harry Potter.

It is a very complex story that uses the concept of 'Dust' In this book we meet Lyra and her family and all the peoples daemons. This is set in another world, although is very similar to the one we know. They have people like gyptions that we can allude to as gypsies and another form of electricity that pre-dates our own. Its a very old world, but very engaging.

You meet all sorts of characters, some nice, some deceitful and many interesting characters such as the armoured bear! It takes you acroos continents and is a real adventure / journey book! I found it very interesting that this is a childrens/young adults book although there is no reason for it not to be, i guess i really was surprised at how much a really loved reading it! And the books keep getting better!!

The crying of lot 49

This is Thomas pynchons shortest and by far most accessible book for most readers. I found the book quiet hard to read, and i did study this as a university English text at 200 level. Without the analysis given from the uni, or if your not from an English based academic background, i would think this book would be awful to read. In saying this, it is enjoyable when you know what it is about.

Pynchon, is so incredibly talented, the book is full of satire and double meanings, i can't wait for the day i read this again,as im sure it is a text that brings many more new meanings every time you read it. Th book includes allusions from the Beatles, the gold rush and couriers traedys, everyline has a meaning of some sort! Even the characters names draw double meaning from Mass, to Dr. Hilarius to Emory Bortz at times i wondered if Pynchon was just playing a big game on the reader!

I didn't like the size of the text, was quiet small making it even more confronting to read i believe.

Maxine Hong Kingstons italicized

This is a fantastic book written in post modern style. Maxine is an incredibly talented Chinese American women that broke the boundries with her writing in America in the 1980's. If you ever get a chance to see an interview with her, it is well worth the look! Her book The Women Warrier is the first book in this sort of two part series, although they can be read apart and it doesn't effect either book.

They books layout at first appears to be confusing, there are bold 'stories' and italicized 'stories' the bold ones are those of Kingston's family, and are read as 'truth' or near truths, whilst the italicized ones are myths and traditional Chinese tales. The book is really interesting for the fact it gives great perspective on Chinese American and the harsh reality of immigrations and the persecution that the Chinese went though, even once in America.

The book is beautifully constructed and well layed out once you understand her method in reproducing the tales. I found i really enjoyed the ancestral tales and the Chinese tales seemed to drag the story on, but in looking at the book as a whole, you couldn't have one without the other. The characters tend to become confusing as there are lots of fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers and so on, but i beleive that Maxine has done this is it is slightly anonymous and for people to be able to imagine their family's in their place, or something a long those lines.

Overall this book is definitely worth a read if you are interested in historical meta fiction, or post modern writing, or even if you just want a challenging read! It won the 1981 National Book Award for Nonfiction and has not dated at all.
