EJ12 Girl Hero: 2: Jump Start product reviews

Evil agency SHADOW is up to something in the middle of the rainforest,. Something that could see them get the jump on SHINE.

Special Agent EJ12 needs to leap into action. She must crack SHADOW's codes and trust her instincts to foil their plans and save the rainforest.

That's the easy part. As EJ12, Emma Jacks can do anything. So why is the state gym competition so hard? Perhaps it isn't after all...

The second book in the EJ12 series, Jump Start follows Emma Jacks, an otherwise normal Australian primary school girl who also doubles as a code-solving secret agent committed to saving the world - especially from those who would pollute it or kill off baby animals!

I have noticed a very strong environmental message in these books and, while a somewhat jaded 21-year-old like me might find them a bit cheesy and implausible, they are just the sort of thing my 9-year-old next door neighbour loves. Rescuing animals, overcoming your fears and saving the world by cracking alpha-numeric codes... EJ12 is actually pretty cool.

I do like that the codes are laid out clearly on one page, giving the reader a chance to solve them before they turn the page to find the answer. Each book has a theme for its codes too - Book One was like a text message and this book uses substitution of numbers for letters. Each code gets harder as the book progresses and there are three to solve in total.

Educational and fun, I look forward to discovering where EJ12 will be sent on her next world-saving mission.
