Father Brown product reviews

Celebrated author GK Chesterton's beloved character, Father Brown, is brilliantly brought to life in this charming new ten-part BBC mystery series starring Mark Williams (Harry Potter, Doctor Who).

Set in the heart of 1950s countryside England, Father Brown is a kindly cleric with a talent for solving crimes. Many years spent hearing his parishioners' confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest discover the truth by looking into the heart of the soul - the passions, dark secrets and hidden desires.

Full of humour and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a contemporary edge to the storytelling. With the warmth of The Vicar of Dibley, the intellect of Miss Marple, the humour of Father Ted and the intrigue of Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown is a funny, compassionate and fresh new take on a classic genre.

When I saw the ads for this it looked like it was right up my alley, nostalgic without being over the top, funny without having to do much and clever as they sought to solve tricky crimes.

Mark Williams does a great job in this as the main role of Father Brown, a man who fought in the war before becoming a man of the cloth who cannot help but to involve himself in local crime investigations (a lot do seem to happen with him right there) much to the chagrin of the chief of police who wished that Father Brown would just keep his nose out of things. Along for the ride are some of local workers, a bored socialite and the parish's secretary who is the town gossip (and also one of my favorite characters).

The mysteries in this are really well done, you think you know them and you think that you can work out exactly what is going on, who committed the crime and why but there are a decent amount of twists and turns and in the end we were more often than not surprised at the end results. There is a great amount of mystery surrounded by some brilliantly written characters who have some wonderful lines, though sadly it does seem to be taking the local TV channel a while to put on season two, I will be hunting it down to watch as I love this show and am glad to hear there is also a season three in waiting.
