The Wonders Collection product reviews

Presented by Professor Brian Cox this out-of-this-world voyage of discovery includes the fascinating series Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, as well as a bonus disc featuring nearly 3 hours of special features.

Wonders of the Solar System explains how the laws of physics carved natural wonders across the solar system, using incredible images and CGI footage. Witness a giant ice found rising over 100km high; an ocean hidden beneath a frozen crust of ice; blood red storm twice the size of our planet and immense volcanoes that could rip a planet apart.

Wonders of the Universe seeks to answer some of the most enduring and profound questions of existence - Who are we? Why are we here? Where do we come from? These are among the most enduring and profound questions we can ask and it is an essential part of human nature to want to find the answers. It tells the epic story of our universe and shows how its story is ours too.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
    •  Blunders of the Universe outtakes
    •  What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity?
    •  Audio Commentaries
    •  Do You Know What Time It Is?
    •  Can We Build a Star on Earth

Having watched, and thoroughly enjoyed, the Wonders of the Solar System I was quite excited to see the second series by the same chap, The Wonders of the Universe. Well, due to the parcel disappearing in the postal system somewhere, I missed my chance so was over the moon to get a shot at the complete collection.

This boxed set of 5 DVDs - or 4 Blu-Ray discs if you choose that option - carried BOTH documentary series, giving you the complete set for a very good price. The educational value is off the scale, and the way it is presented, by Professor Brian Cox, is so casual yet packed with his excitement, even my 3yr old son will sit and watch. He can even understand some of what's going on simply my studying the animation scenes scattered liberally throughout. Now, if that's not "Accessible Science" I don't know what is!

Covering everything from under our feet to the limits of our machine-enhanced vision - and beyond - this dual series is an exploration the likes of which you couldn't get anywhere else, I'll wager. I recall my school days and I tell you... though I had some great teachers, none of them could have pulled off a presentation like this, even if they had the budget for the fancy graphics.

Overall, this is a must-have for any household with kids who have even the slightest interest in space, geology, or astrophysics. Heck, just a general interest in "cool science animations" will be enough for them to find this enthralling - I know I did! Well worth the investment, and it's sure to teach the kids plenty!
