My family really loves home made pizza, and just recently we have made every Friday 'home made pizza day' as Miss 2 just loves being involved in the pizza making process, and we decided that this was a fun way to get her involved in the kitchen and a great way for introducing to some early kitchen skills while at the same time allowing her to make choices about what she wants to eat, making food fun.

I have tried many pizza bases on the market and would usually make my own in the bread maker if I was wanting a thick, fluffy base but on this particular day I ran out of time so we ducked down to the supermarket to buy some bases. This is when I first came across the Romano's Honey and Olive Oil Crispy Pizza Bases. The fact that they were honey flavoured is what enticed me to purchase these over all of the other pizza bases out on the shelf I though that the honey would provide somewhat of a nicer flavour than the usual plain bases. The pack came with 3 pizza bases so I kept 2 out for us to use and freeze the other.

So when I removed the base from the pack you definitely smell the honey, and so because of this I was super careful with what I topped the base with as I didn't want the pizza to not complement the flavours right. I choose to use a master foods sweet chilli sauce with honey as my base sauce, and to this I added some Tegel shredded chicken breast, some smoked bacon, cashew nuts and mozzarella cheese. Miss 2 made her usual pineapple, spaghetti, ham and cheese. We popped the pizzas onto an oven tray and cooked them for about 20 minutes, the bases were rather chewy and doughy I found, though I wasn't expecting this texture due to them being supposedly crispy, perhaps I didn't cook them long enough I'm not sure, but either way they tasted okay.

You could definitely taste the honey and olive oil combination which was perfectly done, it wasn't to salty nor was it to sweet like I had been worried about. These are definitely good for a nice change and due to the sweetness of the dough would probably make a perfect dessert pizza base if topped with custard, chocolate, berries and banana perhaps something I will try one day.

my family of 4 tried out the Honey and Olive Oil fresh pizza bases.
this variety of base comes in a pack of 3, which is great value for money. If you only need one or two bases, the remainder can be popped in the freezer or left in the fridge for the next couple of days, we found that myself and my partner had one each and my two boys shared one.

The taste test:
we found the base its self quite sweet and you could definitely taste the honey and smell it however this was balanced by the savoury toppings we placed on. we choose mini meatballs, baby spinach, pizza sauce and a pizza chesse. the base is quite thick and doughy it makes it easy to place on the toppings and holds them well once cooked and easy to cut however this also meant that the top and bottom of the pizza became crunchy however the middle was more like bread than pizza however no one really complained and it was all finished off . these would be great to keep in the freezer for quick dinners or a good way of using up left over meats as they only take around 10- 15 minutes to cook. I would definitely give these ago again,

We often make home made pizzas at our place, for a quick and healthier alternative to take outs. Romano feature in my trolly often as when cooking the pizza, the base is never soggy. It holds its shape and form under all the toppings my family request! (and all the veges i add into those requests) other bases tend to cave in when you add veges because of some of the water that comes from the veges.

These bases are not too salty like some that have added 'features' but the honey/olive oil combo seems to work well. Another way we eat these is on their own with hummus/garlic butter - really what ever is in the fridge that we can use as a dipper. This is a great afternoon treat for the kids (and the parents!!)

These are a bit more expensive than some other brands of base, but well worth it as they are slightly larger than the cheaper brands as well.

Again, I had to search a little for these - thought they were frozen, but silly me, look in the chiller next time!

We used both the pre-sauced and the honey and olive oil base for this meal - we figured it was an easier way to compare them, plus we like to have leftovers for lunch.

We made a chicken, bacon, camembert and cranberry pizza on this base, popped it in the oven and waited.
When it came out of the oven, the pizza looked good - it hadn't overflowed and was easy to cut. The slices were firm and held up well when being picked up to eat.

I'll be perfectly honest and say I could not pick the honey flavour when eating this, although the cranberry sauce was fairly sweet on its own, which may have masked it. However, the base was tasty. It was a good consistency, crisped up nicely (although not quite as nicely as the pre-sauced crispy base) and was a good size for a meal for two.

Finally, after much anticipation, and thanks to the voucher I was sent (thanks to Romanos and KIWIreviews!) I tried out the Honey and Olive Oil fresh pizza bases.

Again, this variety of base comes in a pack of 3, which is great value for money. If you only need one or two bases, the remainder can be popped in the freezer for another day. Very handy.

The taste test. Just as expected, I was most impressed! The bases are just the right thickness - not too thick, not too thin. This makes for perfect cooking and a crispy texture - no more doughy, soggy disasters. I could detect a slight sweet taste from the honey in the base, which went beautifully with my topping of choice - apricot sauce, chicken and roasted garlic. The sweet note would mean these bases would be perfect for dessert pizzas too, so I find them very versatile.

I have finally found pizza bases that step up to the mark! Thankyou Romanos!
