When I was younger my father would despair over my request that tomato sauce be at the table for every dinner meal, no matter what was being offered. It was great, being able to cover up any foods that I absolutely hated and then complementing something that I did like. I missed out on this when it was available to review but recently I was at Why Knot (a discount food store) and saw these being sold for just $2 a bottle, so I took a gamble and bought a whole tray of them to take home. I no longer use copious amounts of tomato sauce on my meals and my kids don't use it too often either, so it was a couple of days before we had something sauce worthy and gave it a try.

I love the upside down bottle, makes it so much easier to grab every last bit of sauce that you can and you don't have to worry about it going everywhere when you then finally open it. We each used some on our fries and we all agreed that it was a very nice sauce, with the kids using far too much sauce, just so that they could have even more on their plate. I poured some into a bowl at my daughters birthday party, for people to use and there was less than half left by the end of the night. We've now used this on a range of meals and we all agree that it is a rather delicious sauce, so I am glad I took the gamble.

I must admit that I am quite a tomato sauce fan. There is always a bottle in my fridge, and I grew up with it on almost anything. While I can no longer do the boiled vegetables with tomato sauce on top (that goes all water and ick, yuck!) I do enjoy it with lots of different things. I can be a little bit of a tomato sauce snob, enjoying the more tomato ketchup type flavours with a bit of a zing to them.

I love the bottle that Heller's have used for this product. I love the upside down style as there is nothing worse than not being able to get the last of the sauce out of the bottle (one of my favourite aioli brands gets stuck in the bottle and it is infuriating!). Now that a bit has been used I can easily see that the sauce slips easily down the bottle towards the cap, and very little is stuck at the end of the bottle. The cap is very easy to open, and it seems easy enough to squirt the sauce where you want it. The very recognisable Heller's logo is clearly on the bottle which will make this product easy to find on the supermarket shelf.

The best way to try a sausage sauce would be with a sausage right? Yes it would, however the first time I tried it was alongside some wedges that had been cooked in the airfryer (I had no sausages in the house!). The flavour was perfect with the seasoned wedges, it had a bit of sweet and a nice tang to it. This is certainly a combination I will have again.

This past weekend we had a bit of a bbq as a house warming as I have recently moved into a new house. A number of friends were coming, and a couple of bags of Heller's sausages had been purchased to cook on the bbq alongside other meat products. Once the sausages had been cooked they were placed into pieces of bread with some bbq'd onions, and then the sauce was smothered on the top! The bottle made it easy to squeeze the right amount of sauce on and it was easy to control it to make sure it stayed in the bread rather than squirt all over the place. The flavour was perfect. I think that this may almost take the top spot in my favourite tomato sauces. Thanks Heller's for an amazing product that will always be in my fridge from now on!

Are you a bit like me - tom sauce is tom sauce, right? When I saw this, I honestly thought - interesting, a company that does sausages (amongst other things) creating a sauce, what is going to be special about that? However, knowing their other products are great, I decided to request it and give it a go!

My kids do love a bit of tomato sauce, and I was definitely a "luncheon and tomato sauce" sandwich girl in my youth! I honestly think my kids would eat it all on its own if we let them! One thing that I definitely think about with tomato sauce is the amount of sugar in the sauce and how sweet to the taste it is.

I showed the bottle to the kids, asking what they thought of it first, and they remarked that it was from "that guy on TV with sausages at the beach" Mum - now I definitely remember the Hellers bacon and sausages ads, but for them to remember just from the logo - well done on the marketing - that is a definite sign that your logo is recognisable and memorable. They also remarked it was quite "rosey" and red.

Upon trying it, I found the taste really pleasant - a bit more tomato-y than a lot of other sauces, but less sweet, and more true to taste, if that makes sense. We were coincidentally having sausages that night for dinner, so of course had to try the sauce. Hubby gave it a big tick of approval - saying "can we buy this again, not that cheap sugary stuff" !! Next time I tried it, it was on a sausage roll, and as you can see from the picture - the sauce loves us as much as we love it!!!

I can honestly see us using this for more than just a condiment - as a sauce on homemade pizza, to add flavour into my lasagne, an extra something to burgers.... the list just goes on.

I would really love to see more sauces created by Hellers - maybe a spicy sauce even?

When I first saw this product I thought nothing of it, to be honest. It looks like pretty much every other tomato sauce out there, even coming in a similar style bottle to the usual Heinz and Watties varieties. On the other hand, I really do enjoy my tomato sauce. When I was younger it would go in all my meals; from pies to roasts, pasta to curry, tomato sauce accompanied everything.

In the past, my go-to choice in tomato condiment came in the form of Whitlocks Tomato Chutney Sauce, mainly because I enjoyed the apple base, the thick consistency, and the reduced sharpness of the product, so I was interested to see how this Hellers variety would compare.

The product itself is a 560g bottle which is on par with the Watties brand by size, but looking at Countdown's prices Hellers is around 5.5% cheaper so value-wise Hellers has an advantage immediately for those looking for small ways to reduce their shopping bills. Very easy to open and remove the foil seal, the product works exactly like the other products on the market and allows you to point and shoot your tomato sauce quite cleanly. I would recommend ensuring you shake the bottle a little beforehand as the sauce can split slightly which will cause fluid to squirt out first before the thicker sauce itself.

As far as flavour goes, Hellers Sausage sauce isn't offensive in any way. It is very similar to most other tomato sauces, but I did find it a little sweeter, and less sharpness to it, which in my eyes is a big bonus. This sweetness and reduced acidity makes the product perfectly fine to have as a condiment on its own but also lends itself really well for mixing with other sauces. I love hot sauces at the moment as it adds bite to any poorly seasoned meals I may make when I'm on a budget, and Hellers Sausage Sauce combines well with hot sauce allowing me to adjust the heat accordingly and brings an addictive sweetness.

I've tried it with hot chips, on burgers, and even just sat there with a dish of hot sauce and sausage sauce mixed together, simply licking it off of my finger as I watched a movie. It's very palatable, and is a great team player, working well with whatever food it is paired with.

(Can I recommend Hellers release a peanut satay sauce next?)

Tomato sauce is the ultimate favourite condiment in our house, and its consumption has only increased since adding children to our household. We always have a bottle on hand, and changing our regular brand is highly frowned upon by everyone. However, I was really interested to try this Hellers Sausage Sauce. I love the thought of a sauce specifically developed as an ode to the glorious banger (which we also eat a lot of), and wanted to see how many other uses it could have, and if our family would approve.

When we received this sauce, the first thing that was evident was that it is a slightly darker colour than many other tomato sauces. In fact, it was as dark as the sauce I used to buy when I lived in the UK. To me this is a more attractive colour, so was a big tick. The bottle is made to sit cap-down, and being squeezy, you will be able to get every last little bit out of it.

The taste was slightly less acidic and sharp than the classic Kiwi tomato sauce, but more mellow and really tomatoey. Of course, the first thing we had to try the sauce on was sausages - this seemed only fair. We found it complemented the meat perfectly, not quite so overpowering as tomato sauce can often be, and really let the sausage shine through. The truly magic thing was that the whole family approved of the sauce - a true revelation.

Over the next few days, we tried the sauce in a number of different dishes. It went perfectly with chips, fish and burgers on its own. It added a lovely sweet tomato flavour to a bbq chicken marinade and a stir-fry sauce, and definitely enhanced the taste of my homemade tomato pasta sauce.

I am so very pleased that this is more than a simple sauce for sausages. We have found its uses endless, always enhancing, but never overpowering the flavour of the dish. My whole family loved it, and we will definitely be buying it again. Hereā ™s hoping they branch out into other sauces - BBQ perhaps (hint hint)!

I've been a fan of tomato sauce for as long as I can remember. Apparently, it was one of the first condiments I ever tried and I have travelled the world trying every local variant of it, from American Ketchup to Middle-Eastern Shakshuka (which is a dish, true, but it has a spicy tomato sauce as a base.) So, when I heard that Heller's had put out their own recipe, I had to try it. The only down-side being that I am currently cutting all non-lean meat out of my diet. Still, a good tomato sauce goes on anything!

My dish du jour at the moment is a home-made version of Donburi that changes recipe every time I make it based on what I have in the fridge, freezer and pantry at any given moment. However, it always has rice, chickpeas, and an assortment of veges usually topped with shredded lean meat - chicken or tuna being the most common. For a sauce, I usually use a combination of sweet chilli and soy sauces, but this time I just used the Heller's sausage sauce and wow, what a great flavour.

The sweetness of the sauce lifted the dish away from the slightly salty, very peppery flavour it usually ends up with - which is a flavour profile I quite enjoy - but this was a really nice change and one I plan to repeat once or twice a week just to break up the routine a bit more. A few days later, I also mixed this sauce 50/50 with teriyaki sauce to go with the grilled shredded chicken I was using in that dish, and it really gave the meal a unique and pleasant flavour - still had that tanginess from the teriyaki sauce, but was rounded out and given a bit of sweetness by the tomato sauce.

With a social gathering planned for later that week, I decided I would make mini spring rolls and a sweet and sour dip, so I mixed some of this sauce through a pottle of sour cream and added a squeeze of lemon juice, which gave it a really nice balance that complemented the spring rolls wonderfully. Everyone was impressed and demanded my 'secret recipe' - which of course they simply did not believe when I told them. Their loss. Wink Icon

Overall, this is a great sauce, and while not as cost-effective as the bulk-made refills, it carries a lot more flavour and of course supports a great kiwi brand. I will definitely be buying this again - it's on my shopping list for next week!

Anyone who knows me knows that I love tomato sauce and without a doubt I've passed that love of the godly red nectar onto my children. As a family we can easily go through 1-2 bottles of tomato sauce in a week and that's just tomato sauce, we also go through a few other different types of sauces too like BBQ and steak sauce.

I'm pretty confident in my ability to know a good sauce when I taste it so was really happy when I was given the chance to review Hellers Sausage Sauce with my family. To make the most out of the opportunity I invited around some friends and their kids to have Hot Dogs and fries with us and also give me their opinions on it.

First off, I have to mention that I love the new styles of the sauce bottles that are currently on the market and it appears that Hellers likes them too as they have decided to do the whole upside down bottle design making it easier to get every last drop of sauce from the bottle without having to shake the bottle before you use it.

Everyone that came around - a total of 4 adults and 4 children - happily added tomato sauce to their plates both on the hot dog and with the chips. Overall, the reactions were all very positive about the taste of the sauce. The only negative we all had (well the adults had, the kids love it just how it was) was the amount of sugar in it. This was one seriously sweet sauce and it went perfectly with the sausages in our hot dogs and also with our fries but I was very concerned about how much unnecessary sugar we were eating with the added sauce. I think if they could reduce the sugar a fraction the sauce would still taste amazing and be a healthier option too.

Overall, I would love to purchase this sauce again on flavour alone but since we are trying to be a bit healthier, I will have to avoid it until the sugar content goes down a bit. However, for those not concerned about sugar I would highly recommend this sausage sauce!

I don't often use sauce but when I do I like a good sauce, tomato sauce can be a bit boring so I often do a Hickory Smoked BBQ sauce. I had a look at the bottle and like that it is stored on its lid so that the sauce should all get used and not stuck in the bottom of the bottle. There isn't much information on the bottle but there is the website so I guess you can find out more information if you want to know more than the ingredients and nutritional information.

I used it with mince and vegetables and the sauce kind of tasted like liquid sausages, I really liked it, it was a bit spicy but in a good way. I used some on my bacon and egg pie tonight and again the sauce added a layer to the taste and made my food taste nice and not too boring. The bottle is large enough to do several meals and still the bottle has over half left in it so this would be a great size and good value for money, not sure if refills could be bought so that the bottle can be reused instead of going into the landfill, if not then that would be a great product to sell. I did try and look on the Countdown online shopping but this product is not listed.

I offered the kids a taste of the sauce but they were a bit weary, not sure why. They would rather have boring tomato sauce or mustard. This sauce is definitely going to be added to my shopping list.
