An Evening with the Modern Maori Quartet product reviews

An evening with the Modern Maori Quartet is a celebration of humour and heavenly harmonies. James Tito, Matariki Whatarua, Maaka Pohatu and Francis Kora are handsome and well dressed they're all swagger and suave with a fine sense of comic timing and cheeky charm.

These modern men play homage to the Maori showbands of old, working the audience with Waiata and wit, and guitars in hand.

They are men are actors and crooners who put their own spin on classic and modern numbers including Lorde's Royals. Oh to find yourself at a party with a couple of guitars and these guys belting out songs.

There's no doubt this quartet can entertain with song and dance but this show delves deeper, weaving heritage, language and story into feel good vibes.

Just ticking the boxes with my score out of 10 and the question came up Pay to see it again? And I thought I wish I could give a higher score than 10. Yes I would pay to see it again in fact it was the best night out I have had in a very long time. The music, soulful melodies and humour these men create is beyond incredible and I found myself moved right out of my seat.

Indeed I did get off my seat at one point as the band got the entire audience up to dance the hula. The range of songs these guys perform is great with some modern and classic songs and waiata with the perfect mix of The Reo and English. Being someone who doesn't have the strongest Te Reo knowledge, I still didn't find myself at any stage not understanding anything or wanting more English.

And boy can these four belt out a tune. I can honestly say all four have amazing voices - Maaka has the deep notes on form where whereas Francis Kora, boy he surprised me by belting out highs you wouldn't know were possible to reach. Not only that, they sure can play the guitar!! Not to mention the soap box which I just couldn't take my eyes off. Some amazing talent from these guys.

They pay mention to their show being like a typical Maori garage party and I could definitely feel that. Definitely took me back to being at school too with some of the classic Waiata. Loved the AEIOU song and had it stuck in my head for days after, driving my family nuts with my less than harmonious version. I found myself thinking "boy I would love these guys to sing at my wedding." Their voices do win you over and steal your heart.

In fact I could marry that Matariki boy - some handsome men and with voices like angels you'll find your heart melting. They make good jokes about their looks and their interest in women which I found hilarious. In fact they are funny all round. I had the best laugh I've had in ages and found myself smiling all evening. I took a friend with me for the night and we were laughing all the way home.

Can honestly say this is a night out you are really going to enjoy, so find a date and venue and get in fast - the Tauranga show I went to was a sell out. Such a great atmosphere and guaranteed to get you humming along to many of the tunes.
