Tiger Warrior: Attack of the Dragon King product reviews

Heart of a tiger, strength of a dragon, body of a ... schoolboy? A thrilling new action-adventure series with the magical power of the Chinese Zodiac.

When Jack's grandpa gives him a magical jade coin, Jack finds himself caught in an ancient battle between good and evil. For he is the new Tiger Warrior, and it's up to him to save the world!

Luckily, Jack has the spirits of the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac to help him. Tiger can harness the power of fire, Dragon can control water, Monkey has lightning speed and the rest, well they're just happy to be out of the jade coin for a bit! But other ancient spirits want the power of the Chinese Zodiac for themselves...

With a brilliant cast of magical animal zodiac creatures, deadly demons and spine-tingling spirits, this series is for fans of Adam Blade and Percy Jackson.

Junior fiction, ie books aimed at the 5-9 age range, are not books that I pick up often because even though I know the reading level that they are aimed at they still manage to annoy me. However, today was a quiet work day and I didn't feel like anything with a bit of bones to it, so I grabbed this out of the handy box behind the counter. The premise is basic enough, average kid gets told they are going to have to save the world and sure enough a big battle with the main baddie happens. There was nothing surprising or new about this book, but I can see the appeal and know that it will be entertaining to the target group.

What I do like, is that despite our main character being male, he ends up having to team up with a strong, kick-ass female, who we are told he will have to team up in battle with again in the future. This is nice, because it adds a bit more of a gender balance to the humans (the animals of the zodiac are pretty well balanced). For me, this was a nice and easy read with little meat to its bones, the plot is built on the same old basics, the kid manages to start getting a handle on things pretty darn quickly and of course they save the day with future battles to come. However, for a reluctant reader or someone just getting into reading books on their own, this is action packed and fast paced, a good combination for grabbing their attention.
